Free drive is the mode that teaches the game. Without buoys or rivals you can find out how long the boat takes to change direction and how much speed it loses in a turn — both of which are considerably more than a car driver expects.
Racing then puts that knowledge under pressure. The turns come up quickly, the water is busy, and the boats that started alongside you are in exactly the wrong place.
It is one of the more approachable water racers here, which makes it a reasonable place to start.
